Biden Admin Crawls Back COVID Vaccine Mandate for Large Employers After SCOTUS Ruling - Newsweek (January 25, 2022)
The Biden administration has officially withdrawn the Department of Labor's November 5 mandate that workplaces employing more than 100 workers require COVID-19 vaccination, a Tuesday report by the Federal Register revealed.
This move follows a January 13 ruling by the Supreme Court wherein a 6-3 decision the justices decided that the Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) did not have the authority to enforce the Biden administration's order.
New York state mask mandate back in effect as judge grants stay in appeal - Reuters (January 25, 2022)
An appeals court judge on Tuesday granted a stay in an appeal over mask mandates in New York, keeping the rule in effect during the legal process, New York Attorney General Letitia James said.
A day earlier, a judge had struck down the state's mask mandate, one week before it was due to expire. The state attorney general had filed a motion to stay the ruling in an attempt to put it on hold while the state filed a formal appeal.

As a new version of the highly contagious omicron variant of the coronavirus spreads in parts of Asia and Europe, the World Health Organization recommended Monday that officials begin investigating its characteristics to determine whether it poses new challenges for pandemic-weary nations.
Known as BA. 2, the new version of the virus is a descendant of the omicron variant responsible for huge surges of covid-19 in the United States and elsewhere around the globe. Virologists are referring to the original omicron variant as BA. 1.
‘Stealth’ omicron spreads across 20 states - Washington Examiner (January 25, 2022)
A stealthy offshoot of the omicron variant of COVID-19 has been detected in more than 20 states across the country.
Not much is known about BA.2, which differs from the BA.1 version of omicron, but there have been almost 100 cases of the subvariant accounted for in the United States, according to a Newsweek report on virus database GISAID.
Two-thirds with Omicron say they have had Covid before - BBC (January 25, 2022)
Two-thirds of people recently infected with the Omicron variant say they had already had Covid previously.
The findings come from a large, continuing study, React, swab-testing thousands of volunteers in England.
More work is needed to know how many are true reinfections - but the results reveal the groups that appear to be more likely to catch Covid again.
CDC study finds shorter hospital stays during omicron wave, even as infections and death toll mount - The Washington Post (January 25, 2022)
Federal health officials reported Tuesday that the omicron variant caused less severe illness in hospitalized patients than earlier virus lineages, even though its explosive transmissibility has caused far more infections and led to more than 2,200 deaths a day on average, one of the highest tolls since early last year.
Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday that people hospitalized with the omicron variant had shorter stays and less frequent admission to intensive care compared with those hospitalized with other coronavirus variants.
